Once upon a time..

On a Sunday of August 1976, a handful of villagers decided to organize a car boot sale... except there were no cars, and no sale! The idea was to get rid of the junk cluttering their attrics, and garages, exchange treasures, and spend a friendly afternoon in the sun. They called it "Bricabrac". Today the Bricabrac de Mézilles is one of the biggest "brocante" in France with around five hundred stalls filling 4 km of the tiny village (population : 569) streets, and tens of thousands of visitors from all over France, and Europe during the event week-end.

Some facts...

  • On average, 500 professional, and amateur trading in ancient objects of all kinds.
  • The Bricabrac is organized by the Foyer Rural de Mézilles, a non profit organization manned by volunteers, most of whom are from the village.
  • The refreshment stands and cafés/bars are run by the shopkeepers, and the various village associations.
  • The money generated by the Bricabrac enables the Foyer Rural to finance a wide variety of events during the rest of the year (Garden Festival, Easter Egg hunt, dinners, concerts, dances, contribution to the July 14th fireworks, etc.), and the associations (bowling, football, angling, youth club) to depend less heavily on grants for their activities.

How to

  • When: from 6 AM (visitors: 8 AM) on Saturday till 6 PM on Sunday, with late night opening on Saturday
  • Where: streets of the village.
  • How much : 15 euros for 2 m exhibition space, free for the visitors
  • Size of stalls: from 2 to 10 m in the village, from 2 to 20 m at la Croix de la Vierge (edge of the village).
  • It is compulsory to reserve in advance. Stall-holders from previous years receive their reservation forms in May; those not on our mailing list should fill out the form below.
  • Showers, toilets, food (everything from refreshment stands to restaurants) are available.
  • There are no cash distributors in the village (the banks have deserted rural communities!). The nearest are 10 km away, at Toucy and St Fargeau.
